Chilhowee Cross-Country Task Possibilities
For the aspiring Cross Country Soaring Pilot: Below is a list of possible paths for Training, Badges, Records and Fun flights. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond flights as well as Tennessee State Records.
Most of the tasks have been set based on appropriate lengths for FAI Badges. Please plan your flight appropriately, many of the listed tasks could take you places you don't want to go such as Controlled Airspace and Unlandable Terrain. Many would require significant deviation from the direct courselines.

Chilhowee Turnpoints:
The Chilhowee TurnPoint file has 40 turnpoints, including those needed for 100, 200, 300, 500k Triangles, as well as 50, 300 & 500k Out & Return flights and 500k Polygons. 1-25 are "Near" Turnpoints mainly for racing & most local flying, 26-40 are "far" turnpoints mainly used for long badge and record flights. The rest are NonTurnpoint-Airports = airports for landouts.

SSA/FAI Badge Requirements:

| Silver Duration is a 5-hour flight time after tow release | |
| Silver Distance is a 50-km (31.07-mile) cross-country flight | |
| Gold | Gold Altitude is a 3,000-meter (9,843-foot) altitude gain above an in-flight low point |
| Gold Distance is a 300-km (186.42-mile) cross-country flight | |

Diamond Altitude is a 5,000-meter (16,404-foot) altitude gain above an in-flight low point |
| Diamond Goal is a 300-km (186.42-mile) cross-country flight using a pre-declared Out & Return or Triangle course | |

Cross Country Training
Many of these could be flown in a 2-seater with an instructor. Several of these afford the luxury of remaining within a safe gliding distance of the airport [or other landable spots] while permitting practice in holding a heading, finding, entering and leaving lift, and then proceeding on course to predetermined checkpoints. These are all prerequisites for a cross country flight.

Ridge Tasks for fun
Many of these have long jumps between gaps in the ridges. As with other tasks a significant amount of planning may be required.

50km
Silver Badge Distance
50km= 27nm= 31.1sm. Distance needed for the FAI Silver badge.
Many of these could be flown in a 2-seater with an instructor first before going solo. You are encouraged to discuss flight plans with an instructor beforehand.
The badge requirement is for 50km only, so a one way flight is all that is needed. [You can land at the finish airport]. However this list shows Out & Return of 100k which is not necessary, just more convenient to come back.
